Activities

The research of the laboratory of applied mathematics of DICAM is mainly concerned with the development, analysis and efficient implementation of new numerical methods for the solution of hyperbolic time dependent partial differential equations (PDE). The main fields of applications of these numerical methods are in general computational physics and computational fluid and solid mechanics. In particlar: geophysical flows like water flows in rivers or lakes, tsunami wave propagation in oceans, atmospheric flows, astrophysical flows, plasma flows, engineering applications like the flow of air around aircraft and cars, computational electrodynamics, computational solid mechanics like seismic wave propagation or nonlinear solid mechanics with large deformations, including material damage, fatigue and the resulting formation of cracks.
Although seemingly different, all these applications have a common mathematical formulation based on the principles of conservation of mass, momentum and total energy as well as the second principle of thermodynamics. The aim of the numerical methods developed in our laboratory is to respect most of the underlying fundamental properties of the governing equations exactly also on the discrete level.
The research of the laboratory of applied mathematics of DICAM is directly related to the research of other groups of DICAM and has been internationally recognized thanks to the work of its emeritus professor E.F. Toro and its former member V. Casulli. The laboratory has won one ERC grant, one FET grant and several awards. It has many ongoing international collaborations with universities, public and private research institutions and industry.
